Damaged roof leads to temporarily closure of a busy road in Southport

WHEN roof problems occur on a cram day, you don't often expect it will end with a road being closed off to the public. Sadly for commuters, on Tuesday, 22 November 2016, Nevill Street, in Southport's Town Centre was closed to traffic and pedestrians after a roof was badly damaged, prompting fears it could be a danger to the public. We are told the emergency services got a call from a member of the public at around 1:15pm. Merseyside Police then blocked off the busy road so that and Fire crews from Southport could safety start to cut away around 6m to 7m of roofing material. A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said:- "Fire crews have attended a premises on Nevill Street, known as the Will Grove pub, due to a large piece of roofing felt that was hanging from the top of the building. No one was injured and the crew safely removed the danger." We are told that following the incident repair work on the building is now underway.  It is unclear as to what happened to result in the roof being so badly damaged.

On European HIV- Hepatitis Testing Week we find out about a new self testing kit for HIV

THE Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that as of yet has no cure.  As the medical community has continued to develop a vaccine against it and also a cure, sadly the virus is still spreading. Currently there are 4 main types of HIV test with  the most accurate being blood tests, looking for antibodies that your body makes against HIV. Up to now it has meant a sample of blood having to be taken in a clinic and sent for testing in a laboratory, but not anymore.  Jennifer Brown, from bioLytical™ Laboratories Inc. very kindly took the time to have a phone interview with us about the new test they have developed.  They have produced a revolutionary test can be done by you, at home, for rapid testing!  For more information visit bioLytical's website.

What do you think about this test?  Do you like the idea or do you think it will put people off going and getting tested for other STI's as well as HIV?  Please let us know via emailing us to:- News24@SouthportReporter.com.  Also to read about our Editors experience at getting tested, when we looked at STI testing back in 2012, click on here.
